Authenticity as Excellence

[…] When we are authentic, we are congruent. The mind, heart, body, soul are all working together and going in the same direction. And the recipient of any communication from this authentic person is going to feel that congruence. She might not know what to call it, but she knows it and she probably likes it. It feels to both the sender and receiver a little like coming home.

Though there are many experts out there today telling us that we attain excellence by living morally, working hard, and developing healthy habits, it is actually congruence that creates excellence—because when we are congruent, we are living into our truest and most capable selves—if only for a few moments.

Comfort week end starting!

Hi Everyone,

finally it’s Saturday… I like the week end because it’s my “comfort time”. I’d like to take my time to make stuff that I’m in love for!For instance today I started my morning early with a walking’s hour in my town at 7.00 am with a fresh air, silence, getting of thoughts and giving to my mind the opportunity to be free from problems, bad stuff, sad emotions…
I stopped on my unique and favorite no-farm shop (because actually it’s the porch of my official organic farmer Rita!!! now I’m thinking we’re also friends because usually she gave me a vegetables present without asking for that by me!!!) and I bought a very special first fruit of the season: zucchini blossoms.
The flavor of the blossoms is extremely subtle, and cooking them at all really diminishes it. Eaten raw, they are crisp, gentle and a little sweet, with the barest touch of zucchini flavor but none of its bitterness, or its often watery texture. I used that to made a very sweet green smoothie who I renamed Blossom Green Smoothie!
I used a peeled banana, fresh baby spinach, zucchini blossom, white grapes, 1/2 squeezed lemon, a pinch of cinnamon and ginger (and ice if you prefer the fresh taste!)…yummy…yummy…
I also bought other vegetables in season, totally organic, and I talked a lot with Rita about GMO and cryptogamic, she assured me, she’s avoiding any type of GMO and also her husband in they fields.
She shared with me a lot of worrying thoughts about economy of farmers market especially for people like her who avoid chemical products.
The business competion obviously isn’t “au pair” but she really think (like me) that justice wins than don’t stop believing! It’ was a very touched conversation and the atmospher around us was simply magic: fresh air, a rays of sunshine’s morning, the bird singing… I know probably I saw that picture more romantic in my mind than that was in the reality but…dreaming it’s free…than I’d like to dream with open eyes!

Another example of comfort time for me it’s take time for yoga or meditation like before: I slept yesterday night after a short lesson of yoga (by myself) relaxing every muscles of my body with breathing meditation…and after all I started reading The Vegan Girl’s Guide to Life by Melisser Elliot (I found a very big deal : I bought the kindle version for only $0.99!!!) and people….a really love it!

Melisser (known to most as “The Urban Housewife”) presents the basics of veganism for the newbies, lots of DIY craft projects, cruelty–free beauty tips, travel advice, recipes, and more. This book is not just for vegan girls—it’s also for anyone who’s interested in a cruelty–free lifestyle.

And another time I thought about my vegan raw lifestyle and about how many benefits this simple choice gave, all the time, to my health…Not only physically but also mentally… Sometimes people in the past told me: Rory you are really obsessed with healthy foods!! And sometimes I’ve to admit (that in few occasion!!!) the absence of healthy vegan raw food drove me crazy..but that was in the beginning of my new way of life:was in the pas…and I usually said that: the past it must stay in the past…From mistakes you learn a very great lessons but it’s insane beat you about mistake…It’s time to letting go and give yourself another opportunity to be a good person. Now I’m a patience vegan raw girl: it’s not really important if during a travel with my family (or my friends) I have problems to find vegan raw snack: I bring with me an apple or a oat bar…It’s fine…I want to live the moment not the problems of the moment!! In my opinion it’s easy to be vegan in this wrong (selfish) world…really..like a snap!!We have enormous resources at our disposal. We each have 24 hours a day, each packed with 60 fresh minutes. We have a beating heart and lungs full of air in a body capable of incredible things. And there is usually even a little money. Because be vegan it’s cheap, its’ not a middle-class vain attitude like a lot of people think and it’s not a girls/women new caprices like most of men think! The’re a lot of misconception abut that but that rant is for another blog post (coming soon). .. We don’t talk about diet: its’ about the attitude to be cruelty free, compassionate about people, animals and environment: your diet could change the world!!!

Celebrating raw day

Hi Folks,
today in Italy is national holiday “Ferragosto”… Usually I don’t like to celebrate holiday like this, that don’t represent nothing for me, but coincidence it’s also my name day and I decide to celebrate my daily life with a special raw lunch!

But honestly I was inspired, last night, by two beautiful posts from Sayward Rebhal and Gena.

The first one surprise me because finally after a long time I’ve the lucky and the privilege to read a post by Sayward Rebhal in her blog Bonzai Aphrodite. I felt relief to read about her in some way, in the other hand I was a little bit worried because she told she didn’t come very well… Well in this post she talked about her journey in the vegan raw food. I’m especially gratefull to Bonzai because two years ago this was the first blog who I read about raw food and (despite she know that) Bonzay  showed me the way, step by step to approach in a gentle way the raw food style! Then when she stopped to blogging I was so sorry but this episode gave me the chance to find Gena … I’m a lucky girl…I Know 🙂
Bonzai’s post recap every step into the magic raw food world and into this post she tried to give some explanations about her stop-writing..I thought that’s not necessary but read this phrase ” I do plan to write as soon as I can“. In my mind she’s a special woman and I’ll to read for a long long time about her! This post gave me the possibilities to review my raw food personal history, my ED, my goals and wow folks I made very big steps every single day in recent years! Thank you Sayward Rebhal because you gave me a lot of specials tips to be raw, healthy and proud!

In the same way Gena helped me: she posted an epic question: why raw? Oh Gosh…it’s a big question… In the first time when I read this post I was thinking what kind of people ask this type of question…Instantly I had the answer : everybody (including my family and my friends!). Gena gave a lot of beautiful explanation but my favorite it’s “ I love raw foods because they taste wonderful to me, because they’re creative and fun, because they help me to celebrate the beauty of food, and because they make me feel good.”

Especially the final part BECAUSE THEY MAKE ME FEEL GOOD… for people like me with past ED this affirmation it’s the best score that you can get: be in peace with your self, accept the ways that you’re and enjoy life in every single aspect!
For many people the choice of vegan( and raw) diet has lead to the healing, for me for example… Since I was eighteen I choose vegetarian life style and immediately after vegan and cruelty free life style and ethic way of live because it’s the only diet in which my interest in health, compassion for animals, the environment, and my desire to tie my food choices to a greater good to intersect harmoniously. The raw’s step in my case was easy: I don’t remember starving periods, or fatigue, or laziness… I felt energetic and clean in every part of my body. But above I had avoid  the guilty to eat… I started looking food like a friend, like a fuel with good taste not only like a fat enemy! I started to eat for health, but I also eat for pleasure!! My relationship with food was transformed and I always felt the spiritual connection with nature! Then thank you Gena because you too have the merit opening my eyes in a new world with your tips and recipes and reflections about vegan raw world.

Ok now I want to share with you some dishes that I prepared to celebrate my raw holiday 😉

First plate: Raw Pasta Alfredo. I was inspired by this video by Fully Raw Cristina.
For first I made the Alfredo’s sauce, after I put he sauce into a bowl with chopped organic white zucchini, after I sprinkled nutritional yeast  like a Parmesan and chives.

  

Then I made for second ( but I know isn’t right) an appetizer: carrot happy (no) hummus. I used the Susan Voisin recipe .
I blended all ingredients after I served in a little bowl and sprinkled line seeds
  

And just to finish my lunch in a sweet way I’ve made a no diary raw ice cream with wild red fruits!

 

I like to be vegan raw!! Yesterday in the site (where I working) I launched a vegan poetry contest  A vegan is…… ( fill in the blank)
I’m so excited because I want to know the people answers!!! And plus the winners have the chance to go free into a big vegan healthy fest in Bologna in September SANA VeganOK EXPO 2012 with me and other super special guests!!!!

Now I want to conclude this post with a beautiful quote about vegan by Sarathi Anuyayi ” A vegan is IS someone who say ” we can”!
A vegan person is awake and aware or the truth, a person who understand the beautiful connection with all sentient beings!

Tips for eating vegan while traveling

It’s possible to stay healthy and eating vegan during your travels?!

ONE) Start healthy your day: find a local juice bar and order fresh fruit smoothie with soymilk or if you stay in an hotel order oatmeal with raisin or nuts to put in, or if you have international breakfast choose a bowl of soy milk and cereal, or whole’s grain toast with just a little jam or jelly.

TWO) Remember to travel lite: eat foods that are easy to digest when traveling. Usually when you travel lunch or dinner means going to a restaurant: look for ethnic restaurant that will offer a vegan variety of foods for example: Chinese restaurant may have a separate veg menu, Japanese restaurants offers a lot of vegan dishes like miso soup with noodles or tofu, salad, beans. Also most Mexican restaurants offer black bean soup and salad or Italian restaurants offer escarole, or broccoli rabe sautéed with olive oil garlic, minestrone, soup or pasta with zucchini!

TRHEE) You need a snack on the road? Dried fruits, nuts, seeds, trail mix and protein bars are great solutions. Seek out the local farmer’s market or natural foods store for fresh, organic fruits to snack on. The natural foods store may have a juice bar where you can order fresh vegetables juice and smoothie.

FOUR) If it’s possible bring baked whole grain crackers along your trip and fresh cut vegetables and fruits (bring along a small ziploock to keep your snack fresh!).Keep with you nuts like almonds, cashews, walnuts easy and fast to eat and very energetic! You can also pack sandwiches white whole grain bread and peanut butter or vegan cheese alternatives. This saves calories and money!!!

FIVE) Drink a lot of water its’ important stay properly hydrated while you travel: bring with you a vegan stainless steel water bottle in your pack.

SIX) Try to reserve a hotel room with a refrigerator and microwave and before your arriving at your hotel, look online to find local grocery or natural food stores. Stock up on frozen vegan meals, fresh fruits and vegetables, instant oatmeal and whole grain bread.

SEVEN) Before your travel use surf the web and stay in contact for example with the site Couchsurfing research a vegan’s group and chat with vegan people, ask for tips about food, grocery or natural store. In my experience it’s a great solution.

EIGHT) Consult a Vegan Travel Guide and Happy Cow web sites : I used both this summer to find vegan shop and restaurant when I was in Malta and also in Spain! Very useful!

Follow these tips for better vegan nutrition on the road and have a safe and healthy vegan trip!

Officially The “Boss Writer”

Today it’s a big day for me.. It’s officially announced I’m a new Director of Promiseland! Yep!!

Here the article about my “nomination”… I’m so excited and meanwhile terrified because it’s a hard “job”… I don’t like to call this stuff “job” because it’s most a passion, a passion being reality! I’m a flag’s vegan voice in Italy. I’m the hand that write about veganism and compassion for animals in Italy. I’m writing for the biggest website in Italy about Vegan.

I’m a part of the crew how organized last two years the biggest vegan festival in Europe (and I’m thinking in the world for dimension and numbers of participant… Not bad eh 😉
